Local SEO and Google Maps: Common Questions

Local SEO is the set of optimizations that get your business found in Google Maps, the local pack (the three businesses Google shows on map listings), and 'near me' searches. It is different from traditional SEO because the rankings are driven by Google Business Profile signals, local citations, reviews, and physical proximity to the searcher, on top of standard on-page SEO.
Three things move the needle most: a complete and accurate Google Business Profile with the right primary category and service list, consistent NAP citations across local directories, and a steady flow of reviews with responses. After that, on-page local SEO with proper schema and location-targeted content. Map Pack rankings respond fastest to GBP fixes and review velocity.
It depends on your starting position, competition density, and how clean your existing GBP and citations are. In our recent case studies, we took a law firm from rank 18 to top 3 in 90 days, and a commercial truck repair shop to page 1 in under 14 days for a high-value keyword competitors weren't targeting. Most small businesses see measurable Map Pack movement within 30 to 60 days.
They run on the same signals. Your Google Business Profile completeness, review velocity, response rate, citation consistency, and category accuracy feed both Google's organic Map Pack algorithm and your Local Services Ads Quality Score. When your organic Map Pack rank goes up, your LSA cost per lead typically comes down. Most agencies treat these as separate services. We work on them together.

Review count, average rating, recency, and your response rate all influence Map Pack rankings. The two strongest signals in our work are review velocity (reviews per month) and response rate (percent of reviews you reply to). Businesses responding to 80% or more of reviews rank measurably higher in the local pack on average than businesses that ignore reviews.
For service area businesses (home services, mobile repair, legal, etc.) you can rank in surrounding cities by properly defining your service area in GBP, building city-specific landing pages on your website, and earning citations in those geographies. Proximity is still a factor, so ranking will be hardest in cities furthest from your physical location, but expanding visible coverage is the standard play for service area businesses.
Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free business listing that appears in Google Search and Google Maps when someone searches for your business or your service. It is the central asset that controls how you show up in local results, what information appears, what reviews are visible, and whether you qualify for the local pack and Local Services Ads.
