How Much Does SEO Cost in San Diego?

Four industry surveys, what each band actually buys, our own published prices, and the cases where you should not hire anyone.

Quick Answer

Most San Diego small businesses pay $1,000 to $2,500 a month for SEO. Competitive categories such as HVAC, plumbing, legal and dental typically run $2,500 to $5,000. Industry surveys put the average higher, around $3,200 a month in both Ahrefs' poll of 439 providers and Clutch's data across 65,000+ companies, but that average includes enterprise retainers: GoodFirms found 43.3% of agencies charge under $1,500. Below roughly $500 a month you are buying a fraction of one person's time, and you will usually do better managing your Google Business Profile and reviews yourself.

What the surveys actually say

These disagree, and the disagreement is the useful part. Averages are pulled up by enterprise retainers; the typical small business sits well below them.

What each band buys

Under $1,000/mo

Viable in narrow cases

Usually one person part-time, or offshore work at volume. Can be fine for a single-location business in a low-competition category, and is rarely enough for anything contested.

$1,000–$2,500/mo

The realistic majority

The most common band in every survey. Buys real technical work, ongoing content, and local SEO for one market. This is where most small businesses should expect to land.

$2,500–$5,000/mo

Contested markets

Competitive categories, multiple locations, or SEO combined with paid and conversion work. Around the average of the two largest samples, Ahrefs and Clutch.

$5,000+/mo

Enterprise and multi-location

Multi-location, national, or e-commerce at scale. At this level you should be seeing a named strategist and revenue reporting, not a monthly ranking screenshot.

What moves the price

  • Competition in your category. HVAC, plumbing, legal and dental cost more to rank than most niches because more money is chasing the same searches.
  • How many locations or service areas you need to rank in. One city is a different job from twelve.
  • The state of your site. A slow site with crawl errors and thin pages needs fixing before anything else works, and that is real hours.
  • Whether ads, conversion work and reporting are bundled in. Comparing a bundled fee against a standalone SEO fee is the most common way people mis-read a quote.
  • Whether the agency charges a percentage of your ad spend. That is a different model with different incentives, and it changes what the number means.

When not to hire anyone

We turn these down. Taking them would waste your money.

  • You have no website worth ranking yet. Fix or build the site first; SEO on a broken site is money spent to send people somewhere that will not convert them.
  • You need work booked this month. SEO takes three to twelve months to produce consistent traffic. Ads and Local Services Ads move faster.
  • Your budget is under roughly $500 a month. At that level you are buying a fraction of someone's attention, and you will usually do better spending the same money on your Google Business Profile and reviews yourself.
  • You cannot answer the phone or reply to a form within the hour. More traffic will not fix a lead-response problem, it will just make it more expensive.

What we charge

Published, not quoted on request. Signal is $2,000 a month, Momentum $3,500, Command $5,000. Google Maps ranking starts at $997 in lower-competition categories and $2,250 in contested ones like HVAC, plumbing and legal.

Flat fee, never a percentage of ad spend, and you own your site, ad accounts and lead data. If your budget is smaller, we will build a scope around $500 to $1,200 a month rather than pretend a full programme fits inside it.

SEO pricing questions

Most San Diego small businesses pay between $1,000 and $2,500 a month for SEO, and competitive categories such as HVAC, plumbing, legal and dental typically run $2,500 to $5,000. Those bands match the national survey data: Backlinko's survey of 300+ professionals puts the typical retainer at $1,000 to $2,500, while Ahrefs' poll of 439 providers and Clutch's data across 65,000+ companies both average around $3,200. San Diego is a competitive metro, so the same work costs more here than in a small market.
Because a handful of large retainers pull the average up. Ahrefs and Clutch both report averages around $3,200, but GoodFirms found 43.3% of agencies charge under $1,500 a month. The average describes the market including enterprise work; the median describes what a small business actually pays. When someone quotes you an industry average, ask which one they mean and what the sample was.
Below roughly $500 a month you are buying a fraction of one person's attention, and the work that moves rankings is labour. That does not make cheap SEO a scam, but it does mean the scope has to be honest: at that level you should expect Google Business Profile management and basic on-page work, not content production and link acquisition. If a cheap provider promises rankings on competitive terms, the promise is the problem, not the price.
Three to twelve months to produce consistent traffic, depending on how competitive your market is and what presence you already have. Local SEO and Google Business Profile work moves faster than organic rankings on head terms. The honest way to judge it is cost per booked job rather than rankings: if your average job is worth $8,000, one extra job a month covers most retainers in this market.
For SEO the question rarely comes up, since there is no ad spend to take a percentage of. It matters for paid search, where agencies commonly charge 10–20% of spend or a flat $1,000–$5,000 monthly retainer. A percentage model means the agency earns more when you spend more, which is a real incentive question worth raising directly. We charge a flat fee for that reason.
Our plans are published rather than quoted on request: Signal at $2,000 a month, Momentum at $3,500 and Command at $5,000, with Google Maps ranking starting at $997 for lower-competition categories and $2,250 for contested ones such as HVAC, plumbing and legal. It is a flat fee, never a percentage of ad spend, and you own your site, ad accounts and lead data. For smaller budgets we will build a scope around $500 to $1,200 a month rather than pretend a full programme fits.
When you do not have a site worth sending traffic to, when you need work booked this month rather than next quarter, when your budget is under about $500 a month, or when you cannot respond to enquiries within the hour. More traffic will not fix a lead-response problem; it will make it more expensive. In those cases we say so rather than take the engagement.
